So choose a light, sunny spot so that your plants remain strong and healthy.
Do you see the first green shoots appearing from your seed? Turn your nursery pot a few centimeters every other day. This way you prevent the plants from growing towards the light and you ensure that your plants grow nice and straight.
Growing on water
Growing on water instead of in soil is something you see more and more nowadays. It is also referred to as ‘hydroponics’. The vegetables that you grow on water have different types of roots than when they grow in soil. Water contains less oxygen than potting soil, so the plant develops roots that are less branched and can absorb sufficient oxygen.
Did you know that there are special planters for growing vegetables in water? The bottom part of the tray is filled with water, where the nutrients are located. The upper part is filled with brown clay granules in which the roots grow, so that they can absorb oxygen from the air.
The planter is also equipped with a water level meter that indicates exactly when you need to add extra water. The advantage of hydroponics is that it requires a lot less work than growing in potting soil. Perfect if you don’t have such green fingers!
Tip: vertical vegetable gardening
You can of course put your growing pots together on the windowsill, but if you really want to make something original from your vegetable garden, a vertical vegetable garden might be for you. A window garden not only takes up little space, it also looks nice.
